Stone City/Anamosa Tour

   With step-on guide service, the tour begins at the Jones County Tourism office in downtown Anamosa. The first portion includes a drive around the State Men's Penitentiary "White Palace of the West" with a stop only to view the architectural structure that was built from Stone City stone in 1972 by prison labor. Time to go into the new 2002 Penitentiary Museum located in the old Cheese Factory Building (located outside the walls of the Penitentiary) or you may choose time for the National Motorcycle Museum located at 200 E.    On to Stone City a few miles west of Anamosa. We hope you enjoy your day's visit to the scenic area... the inspiration of many of Grant Wood's paintings and the site he chose for his own art colony in 1932-33. We will tour two of the buildings that are on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in the 1860's when two Irish immigrants settled the area and began the stone quarries. Take a brief moment to relax and step into Historic Saint Joseph Church or the elegantly furnished and lovingly restored "The Stone Barn." An experience you won't soon forget. This family has graciously opened their doors to tour groups to see the interior of this stately barn. Plenty of relaxing chairs and tables and exceptional food.    Then a step-on guide from Stone City Quarries can take you through the busy Stone City Quarries that operate today. Blasting out massive blocks that are sawed and custom cut and shipped around the U.S. (free tour). Now time to stop in the quaint shops of historic downtown Anamosa.
